UX Researcher · Interaction Designer

Hi, I am
Vanessa Markos!

Researcher who designs. Designer who researches. MSc in Interaction Technology, four years as a teaching assistant across UX, HCI, and HRI, two internships in industrial B2B design. I sit somewhere between research and design, between rigour and intuition, with a creative instinct that connects the two.

Based in Enschede, Netherlands

About me

Who I am, beyond what I do

At work

I ask a lot of questions, probably more than people expect, because the right question at the start saves a lot of wrong answers later. Prototypes, real people, honest feedback, repeat. The edge cases, the interaction logic, the small moments that make something feel genuinely considered: those are the ones I care most about. I work best close to the people I am designing for and close to the team I am building with. I also enjoy a good challenge and will happily go down a rabbit hole to come out the other side having learned something new. I work in English (C2), Dutch, and German (native).

In life

I am curious by nature, find it hard to sit still, and am always up for something new. I play volleyball and tennis and love getting lost in creative projects, especially anything crafty and hands-on. Discovering new cultures and places is something I genuinely enjoy: I have backpacked through Central and South-East Asia, spent half a year in Canada, and seen a good chunk of Europe along the way. Once something catches my interest, I get excited easily.

Outside of my studies and work, I volunteered as a paramedic and with the fire department, contributed to inclusive education initiatives, mentored students through scholarship applications, and was an active member of several student associations and committees for years. I also put years into student-run cultural projects, including events that drew hundreds of visitors.

Motor Synchrony and Adaptation in Autism Spectrum Disorder: Investigating Perturbation Recovery and Role Flexibility Toward Movement-Based Diagnostic Approaches

Investigated real-time motor synchrony using OptiTrack motion capture, Unity, and a custom Python analysis pipeline. Findings challenged deficit-oriented models of autism: autistic participants showed faster movement recovery and stronger coordination under structured conditions.

Motor Synchrony & Autism

A full empirical study on motor synchrony in autism, designed, built, and run solo. Two experimental tasks, 68 participants, a custom motion capture pipeline. Most research in this field focuses on what autistic people do differently as a deficit. The data pointed the other way: autistic participants recovered faster and synchronised more strongly under structured conditions.

Meet SAM, the Robot Waiter

Participants waved at it, smiled, and said thank you without being asked. Getting a robot to feel trustworthy to strangers is a real design problem. Three challenges, one waiter, and a voice test that changed a core design decision.

OCTOPUS

In elderly care, dehydration is common, hard to spot, and almost entirely preventable. OCTOPUS is a drinking cup that measures intake in real time and gives carers a live overview without the need of checking in person. Designed for a 75+ target group, built from scratch: physical prototype and a full companion app.

ConverTable

A table that draws your conversation in real time, mapping who speaks and who listens. Designed for groups where conversation dynamics are uneven and hard to change. Three prototypes, one ethnographic study, and a finding: visibility changes behaviour without anyone being told to change.

Niemann Machine UI Redesign

Industrial UX in the most literal sense. Wilhelm Niemann GmbH builds mixing machines used in paint, lacquer, and cosmetics factories worldwide, and their control interfaces needed a full redesign. We visited the factory, iterated directly with their engineers, and delivered the result: full interaction concept, custom iconset, and a design system built to outlast the project.
